Staff Software Engineer (Crypto Services) Full Time

Corda is a DLT designed for running complex workflows between businesses, without any centralized points of control. You will work on a blockchain/DLT platform trusted by banks, insurance companies, stock exchanges, payments companies, and others – highly demanding industries with the interesting technical challenges that come with them.

As part of Corda’s Core Platform team, you will:

• Act as a technical leader and subject matter expert with specific focus on cryptography and PKI, including hands-on working with HSMs and cryptography libraries (e.g. Bouncy Castle).
• Work with industry-leading technologies to build the most robust version of Corda to date.
• Collaborate with Corda’s engineering teams to help produce a highly available, horizontal scaling, multi-tenant version of Corda, working right from the bottom peer-to-peer messaging layer up to the flow engine and ledger layer Corda has become known for.
• Design, develop and deliver complex IT solutions that span multiple functional areas, defining milestones and deliverables for every step of the way.
• Contribute to the technical vision of the Corda roadmap and provide detailed input on how to deliver that vision.
• Liaise with R3’s Professional Services and Customer Support teams regarding support questions or guidance that involve cryptography/PKI/HSM aspects.
• Work with R3’s Professional Services team to best advise our customers’ future Corda requirements involving cryptography/PKI/HSM.
• Working closely with cross-functional team members, e.g., Product, QA and Project Management.

About You:

• You are a highly motivated, self-sufficient software engineer with system design skills. You are curious and quick to learn about new technologies, and keen to build on your skills by learning on the job. You have built distributed systems previously.
• You have industry experience working with cryptography and PKI. You have used and understand cryptography libraries such as Bouncy Castle, preferably in the JVM ecosystem. You have knowledge of how HSMs work and possibly have experience working with them. You are comfortable working directly with customers, stakeholders and security teams who might have deep and challenging questions in these areas. You are able to look around corners at future R3 requirements in this space, contributing to R3’s roadmap in your domain and influencing the roadmaps of other teams.
• You have experience or a deep interest in high availability and/or horizontal scalability of distributed systems, and are aware of or have worked with Kafka before.  You may also, or alternatively, have worked with socket programming, TLS, Java NIO, Netty or similar.
• We believe the best Engineers can adapt to and learn any language, so whilst we are at heart a Kotlin shop, we welcome anyone with a strong software engineering background who wants to learn. If you have in-depth JVM knowledge, (garbage collection tuning, performance and memory profiling), and/or familiarity with the Java ecosystem, that is a bonus.

Responsibilities:

• Coding and design, and assisting other Engineers with coding and design.
• Utilise your subject matter expertise to lead development of significant capabilities in R3 products and services.
• Use comprehensive judgment to make decisions of high complexity and impact, utilising team opinion and support from senior leadership where needed.
• Use business analysis skills to interact with team product managers to marry technical delivery and client requirements.
• Mentor other engineers, enabling them to understand your approach to understanding and solving complex problems.
• Use well-developed customer focus skills to anticipate internal/ external customer requests.
• Contribute to the technical direction and strategic vision of the engineering team.
